“Why did she make things? Well, she enjoyed it, of course; but it also somehow helped her remember who she was and where she came from.”

Back in the days before Pinterest, my mother loved to create. She was a room mother for myself and my sisters and loved baking goodies and making treats to send to school parties. Sewing was also one of her favorite pastimes. I remember a closet filled with colorful fabrics that begged to be touched – seersucker, gingham, satin, and velveteen! There were boxes filled with buttons of every hue. It seemed like a magical closet. She loved to make children’s books and stuffed animals from printed fabrics – and giving them away made her even happier.
We took ceramics, tole painting, and painted t-shirt classes. I took up counted cross stitch, and she tried her hand at decorating cakes. There are so many ways to express a creative spirit!
Mom made so many things during her lifetime, and her joy was sharing them with family and friends. My sweet Mom passed away at the age of 90 and was still creating until the last few months of her life. I like to think that little pieces of her are still gracing the lapels and homes of others.
It is strange, however, that it took me many years to see the connection that ran from my Mom to me. We had a shared love of all things colorful and textured. The creative outlet available to me through Stampin’ Up! is about more than just paper and ink. It’s about sharing love with others and awakening an undiscovered creative spirit in them that they will pass down to their families and friends. It’s about bringing people together and developing new and deeper friendships and relationships.
I see my mother’s creativity continuing in new generations. My son expresses his love of color and texture as a successful Landscape Architect. My youngest granddaughter (born in 2012) loves all things crafty, and we have such fun creating cards and pictures, relying heavily on bling! And so, I dedicate my business to my beautiful Mom. I am honored to say that I am my Mother’s child.
